AAAP Readers urged to get Political!
The Black community in Williamsport has no interest in politics. We do not seek political power. Efforts to promote race sensitive candidates has been sporadic. This is unfortunate because the Black population of Williamsport is probably the fastest growing segment of the community. We are reactive rather than proactive.
In recent census data, it was shown that Lycoming County lost about 1,000 White residents but gained about 1,000 Black residents. Most of these Black newcomers probably settled in Williamsport. This has significant political ramifications. Blacks have overwhelmingly supported the Democratic Party since the days of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. And the Democratic Party can count on African-Americans to deliver the goods.
In the last municipal election cycle, Democratic voters outnumbered Republican voters. This causes many local politicians to have sleepless nights. In Pennsylvania, ex-felons can vote. Ex-drug abusers can vote. Poor people can vote. These groups would probably vote for Democratic candidates, if they were so inclined. Without endorsing any candidate, churches and fraternal organizations could encourage greater participation in the political process. This is empowerment.
Williamsport’s Black community is a sleeping giant. Considering the polarizing political discourse across the country, perhaps it is time to sound the alarm. “Wake up and get involved!” Voting may not be enough. Organize and offer a slate of qualified candidates.
Register. Vote. Volunteer. Know the issues. Organize. Form alliances. Run for office. Get involved.
