What other people are doing. June, 2007
The 3rd Ward Bike Workshop of Houston, TX.
A community center making bicycles!
Sometimes the answers are so simple.

Check what the folks in Houston, Texas are doing to help kids. Four years ago a group of activists came into the impoverished neighborhood of the third ward in Houston to help the children. They started a unique type of community center. "Earn-a-Bike is a program that teaches young people to fix up bicycles, while delivering skills, experience and a sense of community to kids in some of Houston's poorest areas. The kids volunteer to fix up a bike and eventually ride off with one of their own. The idea is the brainchild of four young college graduates with a goal of empowering inner-city youth. Can bikes really move kids out of poverty?"

The kids repair bicycles.

The kids are taught discipline, mechanical skills, teamwork, responsibility and pride in their accomplishments. Children learn how design and fabricate custom bicycles using welding equipment and other tools. They earn points towards receiving their own bike.

And the kids do more than just make or repair bikes. They also silkscreen t-shits and operate a music worshop.

Imagine what can done here in Williamsport. Bicycles and children simply go together like peanut butter and jelly. The 3rd Ward Bike Workshop is great success story that can repeated in other places around the country.
