The chart above shows the results of testing white 4th Graders on their reading skills in 2005 in 11 cities across the United States (Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Cleveland, Distrct of Columbia, Houston, Los Angeles, New York City and San Diego.). Notice how many have tested at or below the "basic" level. This is not good, the numbers are apalling. Place the cursor over the chart to see the results of black 4th graders. The black kids tested much worst. The charts are part of an eye-opening data web site operated by the Institute of Educational Services, U.S. Department of Education, National Center for Education Statistics. The formal title for the charts are "District Reading Results by Race/Ethnicity." This is a small part of the Trial Urban District Assessment Program (Nation's Report Card).
